Who's land is it anyway?

In 2012, Governor Herbert signed into law the Transfer of Public Lands Act, demanding that the federal government cede all land held by the fed to the state. This law had a deadline for this to happen of Dec. 31, 2014.

This deadline has passed, yet the fed still holds onto the land. What can or will Utah do in attempt to reclaim this land. Is it a wise idea to try?

  1. It think we've talked about this in class. I agree with Mrs. McMurray. Sure, it'll be nice to have our lands back but what happens if there is a fire? Or some form of a natural disaster? Are we gonna go crying to the central government asking for a check? How will we pay for it?

  2. I don't like the idea of the state running the public lands anyways, so I think Utah should stop fighting for it. It is the federal government's land, so I'm not sure we have much of a claim to it.

  3. Why not let the federal government keep the burden? Utah is doing very well economically, and I don't see why they want to bury themselves under so much possible debt. And also, I don't think they can "demand" too much of the feds...Does this include National Parks? Cause that definitely wouldn't happen. I wonder what Governor Huntsman would have said.

  4. We need to get those lands back and burn the 'clean' coal. haha. Our state does not have the money to maintain these lands, so the federal government must be the ones to maintenance and own it.
